The town of Bjelovar was built by the order of the Empress Maria Theresa for strategic military reasons in 1756. In 1874 it was granted a status of a free royal town. Bjelovar is situated in north-west Croatia, just over 80 kilometers from the capital city, Zagreb. The population of 40.276 live on 187,78 km2 of land. It is a natural centre and an economic, judicial and administrative seat of the Bjelovar-Bilogora County and is the seat of Bjelovar-Križevci Diocese. Basis of development of the city is agriculture, food, wood and metal industry. A lot of significance is given to small and medium entrepreneurship and education. The potentials of the town are found in the renewable energy sources, including the geothermal resources. City Administration is preparing a package of measures for businessmen who want to invest in Bjelovar and thus open new jobs for the inhabitants. From 2018, for certain investments, Bjelovar will be a tax free city. Also, many new projects are launched to transform Bjelovar into a Smart City. Bjelovar has five primary schools and seven secondary schools, also University of Applied Sciences for professional studies of mechatronics, computer science and nursing. Our well known, traditional events are: BOKfest, an international theatre festival, Terezijana, a tourist entertainment event, DOKUart, an international documentary film festival, Christmas Gala Concert, an International Percussion Week, National Minorities’ Evening, Bjelovar’s Cultural Summer, Comedy Fest, Advent in Bjelovar and many other events throughout the year.
