Matica hrvatska was founded in 1842 with a purpose of promoting national and cultural identity through art, science, humanities and economy. It is one of the largest and the most important publisher of books and journals in Croatia. All Matica's publications can be purchased in Knjižara Matice hrvatske (Matica hrvatska Bookstore). Beside publishing, Matica hrvatska organizes many cultural and scientific events such as book promotions, symposiums, round tables, scientific lectures, discussions and classical music concerts. Head office of Matica hrvatska yearly holds over a hundred manifestations, and Matica's branches are equally active. One of the most important Matica's editions is “Stoljeća hrvatske književnosti”, having published over a hundred publications. The head office of Matica publishes a biweekly journal “Vijenac”, literary journal which covers art, culture and science, “Hrvatska revija” and a literary and scientific journal “Kolo”. Young artists display and exhibit at Galerija Matice hrvatske (Matica hrvatska Gallery). During the “Mladi glazbenici” (“Young artists”) cylce talented and award-winning musicians give concerts. Salon Matice hrvatske (Matica hrvatska Showroom) organizes lectures in various fields of sceince, art and culture, and most of the lecturers are well educated young people. Various departments of Matica hrvatska hold lectures, discussions and conferences in the area of their activity. There are over a hundred branches of Matica hrvatska. They publish over twenty literary journals, such as “Dubrovnik”, “Književna revija”, “Dometi”, “Zadarska smotra”, “Riječi”... Because of their cultural activities, branches are unavoidable and the only hardpoint of cultural life in certain regions. Any citizen of age of the Republic of Croatia or Croatian with another citizenship that agrees with Matica hrvatska's programme can become a member.
