PLAN D is an international design festival and educational platform that came out of the program upgrade process of D-DAY – an international design festival, held in Zagreb, Croatia, from 2010 to 2016. The name change to PLAN D reflects the transformation of this longtime design event, that is, its stepping out from the festival format into a design education platform with a program active throughout the year. The goals of the platform are multiple – from professional training of young designers to promoting contemporary design practices. The change of direction in programming is the result of discovering a need for creating a flexible and diverse educational program that will reflect actual transformations of the design profession. Considering that university programs and curriculums are exceptionally inflexible and slow in introducing progressive currents, while the nature of technology and the design current itself are exactly the opposite, developing an informal educational program capable of more agile formulation of educational modules and contents is necessary for fulfilling the educational needs of young designers. PLAN D is focused on expanding the understanding of the design profession, which is often perceived one-dimensionally among the general, but also the expert, public. Rather, design will be presented as a profession that changes dynamically in the context of frequent technological development and which presents the designer with new demands and challenges. Instead of the traditional design practices, Plan D will push to the forefront those that continually extend the boundaries of understanding and fields of application of design – design as a concept, criticism, scenario and speculation, collaborative methodologies and strategy.
