The Center for Inclusive Work Activities (CIWA) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in November 2004, in Zagreb, Croatia. Access to quality, person-centered community-based services is an important precondition to the deinstitutionalization of people with intellectual disabilities, and to their successful inclusion and active participation in society. CIWA’s community-based supported work activities help its clients enter the world of work in and around Zagreb. CIWA advocates for the inclusion of people with intellectual difficulties in mainstream employment because the right to work is a basic human right. The experiences of companies who have been CIWA’s partners for years are very encouraging: they report that people with intellectual disabilities consistently demonstrate that they have the capacity to be respected and productive members of any team. Since 2004, CIWA has been providing supported work activities at our work center and, in partnership with employers, we have been successfully supporting the inclusion of people with intellectual difficulties into work on the open labor market. Being included in the world of work and being successful in performing various tasks increases self-confidence, dignity, happiness and promotes financial independence of the people involved.
