Bilingualism Matters@Rijeka is a branch of the Bilingualism Matters information centre, headquartered at the University of Edinburgh. Our branch is hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka. The aim of the centre is to: • Disseminate accurate and scientifically founded information about bilingualism • Offer expert advice on bilingualism • Raise awareness of the importance and benefits of bilingualism • Promote bilingualism in society Our understanding of bilingualism is very broad: we define it as regular use of more than one language in everyday life, where the speaker's command of each of these languages is neither necessarily equal, nor necessarily perfect. Our activities encompass various forms of bilingualism present in our community, to wit: • Learning foreign languages • Learning Croatian as a second and foreign language • Using Croatian dialects • Using minority and endangered languages Through our activities, we wish to bridge the gap between researchers and our community and contribute to the fostering and preservation of our community's linguistic and cultural diversity.
